Dillon Powell and Alex Phillip Smash NCAA Division 2 and 3 Indoor 5,000-Meter Records at David Hemery Valentine Invitational

The reigning men’s individual cross country champions in NCAA Division 2 and Division 3 added to their exceptional legacies Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at the Track and Tennis Center at Boston University.

Colorado School of Mines senior Dillon Powell lowered his own Division 2 indoor 5,000-meter record by finishing seventh in the elite section in 13 minutes, 28.46 seconds, improving on his mark of 13:33.68 from last year’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational.

Alex Phillip of John Carroll eclipsed the Division 3 indoor record achieved earlier in the day by Christian Patzka of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at the Midwest Elite Invitational at Whitewater’s Kachel Field House.

Phillip ran 13:44.98 to finish fifth in his section in Boston, taking down the 13:49.04 standard set by Patzka. Ethan Gregg of Wisconsin-La Crosse clocked 13:52.59 and now ranks No. 3 in Division 3 indoor history.

Phillip placed 31st overall among all 5,000 competitors at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, an event won in 13:09.37 by former Campbell All-American and Wake Forest assistant coach Athanas Kioko, who followed his 3,000-meter victory Feb. 4 at the Camel City Elite Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., with a personal-best effort in Boston.

Phillip set the Division 3 indoor 3,000-meter record by running 7:53.24 on Jan. 27 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston.

Ryan Wilson of MIT won his section of the mile in 3:55.29, breaking the Division 3 indoor record of 3:56.88 produced last year by Aidan Ryan of Williams at the John Thomas Terrier Classic.

Wilson became only the third male competitor in division history to run a sub-4 indoor mile. placing ninth overall from all sections combined. Amos Bartelsmeyer of Nike Union Athletics Club prevailed in 3:50.45.

Rowan also set the Division 3 indoor men’s 4x400 relay record Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational by finishing second in 3:10.09, with Princeton prevailing in 3:10.01.

Nana Agyemang, Jah'mere Beasley, Marquise Young and Amara Conte helped the Profs eclipse the 2004 mark of 3:11.10 established by Lincoln (Pennsylvania) at the IC4A Indoor Championships.

SUNY Geneseo elevated to No. 3 in Division 3 indoor history by taking third overall in 3:11.65.

Rowan’s performance marked the second Division 3 indoor relay record produced Saturday, with Mount Union breaking the all-time mark in the women’s 4x200 by clocking 1:40.25 at the All-Ohio Championships at The Steemer at Wittenberg University in Springfield.

Kennady Gibbins, Madison Miles, Taylor Cupp and Kenadee Wayt helped Mount Union take down the 2019 standard of 1:41.55 achieved by Nebraska Wesleyan at the American Rivers Indoor Championships in Iowa.
